Breakfast Club Frankens: The Athlete

8:21 PM Laura 11 Comments

For our second stop aboard the franken train, we're going to visit The Athlete.

It was inspired by Emilio Estevez's character, Andy.

Since this guy was hopped up on school pride, it's only fitting that the polish in his honor should be blue, which is obviously the school color judging by his letterman.

Here are some bottle shots so you can see the lovely it in different lighting.

This is two coats. The formula is pretty good on this one and I adooore the color. It looks mundane indoors but outside... Wowza! I am astonished with my genius.

Maybe I'm a little biased, since not only did I make this but I looove blue AND shimmer, but I think this is FABU. I mean... there's nothing I don't like about this. Absolutely nothing.

I'm going to go bask in my own glory now. If you need something, have your people call my people. Actually, on second that, let my people call your people. Toodles, dears.

**EDIT** I forgot to put in the recipe. Here ya go!

Breakfast Club Frankens: The Princess

7:12 PM Laura 9 Comments

So before I do anything else, I want to call to your attention to the fact that I now have 70 followers! Yaaaay! Every time that follower number creeps up I feel great! Have I ever told you guys you are all supafly? Well, you are.

P.S. That also means we are 31 followers away from a contest/giveaway. So maybe you could help me out? I would do one sooner but I am a little short on cashola for prizes right now so waiting till 101 is a better option. Anywho, if you have any tips for politely growing a blog (i.e. no link h00ring, because nobody likes a link h00r) then I am your grasshopper and I have much to learn. If you want to be my sensei or something like that. That would be cool. I would appreciate being sensei-d.

Right. So.

I am very happy to share with you a collection of frankens that I recently made in honor of one of my favorite movies, The Breakfast Club. I'm going to show them to you in the order I made them, starting with The Princess.

The Princess is (hopefully) obviously inspired by Claire, Molly Ringwald's character.

And her pink shirt and princessy, prom queen ways.

The Princess is a medium pink with hidden gold shimmer and some intermittent glitter. I encourage you to click on the pictures in order to see my baby in its full glory.

And here she is on my nails. Continue to biggerize the pictures or I will send angry ogres with pitchforks after you.

This is the only half-decent shot I could get inside.

Lamp. I know this isn't usually my favorite place to photograph but she turned up surprisingly well here.

Here's the full effect, just so you get the idea.

The formula is a little thick and a tiny bit lumpy, but I added one generous coat of OPI topcoat and then a thinner coat of Out the Door on top just to speed things along, and it was smooth and shiny after that.

This is probably my least favorite out of the collection. It looks like a soft pink creme from a distance, you have to look up close to see the glitter. I added as much clear as I could to try to help the glitter show through, but I ran out of bottle space.

I still like it overall and I think it's a good representation for Claire. Man... I love that movie.

Here's the recipe if you so desire:

Yes, I was too lazy to type it out again.

Sorry I don't have the amounts for most of it, I wasn't keeping track, I just added as needed.

Just to keep you interested, here is the entire army:

And that's all you're getting for now. Tune in next time for the second installment!

Borghese Not So Stellare Notte

7:52 PM Laura 9 Comments

As soon as I saw the bottle of Borghese Stellare Notte I was smitten.

I mean look at it. It's like an oil spill in a bottle. It's got all those beautiful colors floating around in a dark base.
On the nail... not so much.

This is two coats. Yes, there is a blue/pink duochrome quality about the shimmer, but it's kind of weaksauce. The base is much too dark. It's very nice out in the sun, but unless you're going to be outdoors 24/7 I don't think this is worth it. The formula was nice, but I still can't help lamenting how beautiful it could have been! I mean just look!

*sigh* I really hate it when the beauty in the bottle does not translate to the nail. It's always disappointing. Looks like this one is going in the purge/swap/possibly eventual blogsale pile.
I know it's happened to you, so tell me about your biggest polish disappointment. I'd love to commiserate.

P.S. The poll ended, and seeing my Breakfast Club frankens was the overwhelming winner. I'm so glad you guys love me! So that's what we'll be seeing starting tomorrow. Yay!

Orly It's Not Rocket Science

8:32 PM Laura 10 Comments

Oh really, Orly? It's not rocket science? That's kind of a funny claim considering that THIS POLISH LOOKS LIKE BABY DOO-DOO.

Orly It's Not Rocket Science. Sure, it looks nice in the bottle, but on the nail...

WTF? I could tell it was fugly as soon as I did the first coat, so I only left it alone as an accent finger. On all my other fingers, I did one coat of Finger Paints Scenery Greenery and then another coat of It's Not Rocket Science. The accent finger has 3 coats. (2 would have sufficed for opacity but I was hoping a 3rd might make it less ugly. I hoped in vain)

The sad part is, it looks exactly like it does in the bottle on all my other nails.

But OMG. Have you ever seen a more baby barf-like color?

Ewwww.

Anyway. The formula was good but ohgod the colorrr. I love the way it looks over the dark green but I'm so sad that it looks absolutely nothing like the bottle color.

Verdict: Someone get me a diaper.

Essie Fair Game + Tag + Dragonfly!

7:30 PM Laura 11 Comments

So I tried out Essie Fair Game because it looked like a blueish silver, but it was more silver than blue, and I wasn't really feeling it, so I didn't take pictures of it until it was all gross. I've only got this one semi-decent one.

Inside

I'm pretty sure this is two coats. I don't even remember about the formula... which must have meant it was kind of middle-of-the-road.

As you can see, I've also started using Out the Door topcoat. I'd heard good things about it on MUA and wanted to try it. It does dry reasonably quickly, probably not as fast as the infamous Seche Vite, but it gets the job done and I don't want to try SV because a) many people have problems with shrinkage when they use it and b) it's not big 3 free. I will probably succumb to the hype eventually, but for now, I like Out The Door. It is almost completely solid within two minutes, rock hard after five. It's also very shiny. Although I'm pretty sure it made my polish actually chip faster, lol. But I've started wrapping my tips with it so hopefully that shouldn't be an issue anymore.

Anyway, I have one more tag that I need to get around to. I promise this is the last one! (for now at least, lol)

It's a Would You Rather tag, and I was tagged by All Things YK Hearts. Thank you YK!

Would you rather lose all of your mascaras, eye liners, lipsticks and lip glosses or lose all your palettes and eye shadows?
Well, this is an easy question considering I don't wear eyeshadow. Although I do use it for frankening... but let's just say this is purely from a what's-going-on-your-face perspective. I'd easily ditch shadow.

Would you rather chop off all your hair or never be able to cut it again?
Never cut my hair again. I do not have the bone structure for a pixie, lol. I love my long hair! *snuggles in hair* Just call me Rapunzel.

Would you rather have a coral cheek or a pink cheek?
Well, I don't wear blush either. Yay. But since my skintone is roughly that of the Pillsbury Doughby, I'm pretty sure coral would clash. So I say pink.

If you had £1000 to spend, would you rather buy clothes or make up?
I have no idea how many US dollars 1000 pounds are, but I'm sure it's a heck of a lot. Since I don't wear a lot of makeup (as you might have guessed) I would go for the clothes, no problemo.

Would you rather apply lipstick as eyeliner or eyeliner as lipstick?
Well... that sounds unpleasant. I guess if I could use a really dark purple lipstick I would use that at eyeliner. But if I'm going to be fair and say we're dealing with black eyeliner and red lipstick, I would rather go goth and have black lips rather than looking like a sleep deprived crackhead with red-rimmed eyes.

Would you rather only shop at MAC or Sephora?
Is this a trick question? Sephora! You can get so much more stuff there!

Would you rather use only one eye shadow colour or one lip colour the rest of your life?
I guess I could say that I would just not use eye shadow for the rest of my life... I don't even know how to apply eyeshadow. I've tried it but I just look dumb, eyeshadow seems really useless to me. So I'd rather just forgo it all together.

Would you rather wear winter clothes in the summer or summer clothes in the winter?
I'm a delicate flower! You can't ask me to do that! Ugh... I guess since I live in Houston I would do summer clothes in the winter, even though I can't stand being cold, but the thought of sweating the day away for 3/4ths of the year... yeah I don't think so.

Would you rather have dark nails or bright nails all year round?
Bright bright bright. No question about it.

Would you rather only be able to wear your hair in a pony tail or messy bun?
I am not a bun person. I do not do buns. I do, however, do ponytails.

Would you rather never be able to paint your nails again or never use lip gloss?
Lip gloss, GTFO. Nail polish, come to mama!

Would you rather shave your eyebrows and have none at all or sharpie them in everyday?
Well, this is kind of a choice between the lesser of two evils. I guess I would have to stock up on sharpies!

Would you rather live without make up or nail polish?
I would ditch the makeup in a heartbeat. As long as you take care of your skin, I really don't think there's a reason for makeup. I see so many women, of all ages, wearing the most atrocious makeup, and I can't help thinking how pretty they might be if they just went au naturel. Not to mention I'm pretty sure I would go through some kind of withdrawal if I had to give up nail polish.

Phew! I won't be passing this on to anyone else, I'm exhausted. I have no one else to pass it onto, I've been having tags like crazy lately! I hope you enjoyed it, though. :)

As a bonus, here's some photos of a dragonfly I snapped a few days ago. He was a good little boy and posed for pictures.

Have a nice day!
