That's all the French I know. If anyone knows what I said, please tell me. It was probably like "Monkey flaps, why beach ball you do?"

And without further ado, here is ze French Manicure! (Both shots outside, since it looks pretty much the same in any light).

I know, quite simple. I did this because my aspiring-designer friend asked me to be a model for this fashion show thing she entered in, and I didn't want my nails competing with the skirt. This is two coats of Orly Angel Face with OPI Alpine Snow on the tips. I used tape, of course.

And here's the skirt I modeled:

Designed by the lovely Willow Curry

The fashion show was fun! I was hoping that there was a prince in the audience, seeing as Wills and Kate met when she was in a fashion show. Better luck next time, eh?

Mauvelous

Cheerio, mates! Lovely day, eh? Did anybody pop on the telly to see the royal wedding? You bet your tea and crumpets I did! Not by choice, since I had to get up extra early anyway, but I figured I might as well watch it since I was up. Jolly good show, I think. Loved Kate's - ehrm, Catherine's - dress.

Anywho, after yesterday's orange-tastrophe, I was in the mood for something calmer, and I discovered this huge makeup kit that I got in a white elephant gift swap a few years ago. It came with four unnamed polishes, but the brand is The Color Workshop. Anybody heard of it?

The polish was quite lovely. I took many pictures. Be sure to click on the first and third ones to see the multicolored shimmer.

This is three coats of demure propriety. Appropriate for a princess, or a Duchess of Cambridge. Application wasn't problematic, but I couldn't get the exact right amount of polish I wanted on the brush. Just a personal preference, really. I did have some warty-looking bubbling on my left thumb, but all the other fingers were 100% bubble-free.

This was much more flattering on me than the orange, thank goodness. What's your best color? Are you insanely jealous of Kate Middleton right now?

P.S. I call Prince Harry.

I hate everything

7:37 PM Laura 0 Comments

Today's polish is brought to you by the letter RAGE and the number DIE IN A HOLE.

Okay, so I'm not really THAT mad. I was last night and this morning. Let me tell you how it started...

So I've been wanting to try this really cool mani idea that I saw on Chloe's Nails, except all in black, so it would be really sophisticated-looking. When I was at Ulta a few weeks ago, I saw that they had matte topcoats, and CND Super Matte was the cheapest, so I got it. I've been hoarding it for just the right moment, and I decided last night was it. So I painted my nails with my beloved CG Midnight Magic, waited for it to dry, and then painted the CND on the tips, and waited. I waited what seemed like my entire life.

It was not matte.

But this isn't when I got REALLY mad. No, I thought, "Well, maybe I'm supposed to use it on wet nail polish." So I tried that.

And waited.

IT WAS NOT MATTE.

WHAT THE HECK, CND? THE INSTRUCTIONS SAID THAT YOU TRANSFORM "GLOSSY POLISH FINISHES TO A MOD, MATTE FINISH." UM, NO. THIS IS FALSE ADVERTISING.

What's the dealio, peeps? Do I have to use it on other CND polishes? In that case, that sucks, since I have none and don't know where they're sold.

So, I was now in full-out hate mode. I was sitting in bed at night with my black-stained nails (having viciously scrubbed them clean) and all of a sudden I couldn't stand them. I was going to die if I didn't cut my nails, so I went to my nail-supply drawer, grabbed some clippers, and hacked away. I've heard that you're not supposed to use these clippers, but the situation seemed dire and I didn't want to tediously file away. I was a little overenthusiastic on the middle finger of my left hand, but other than that they're all the length I want them to be. This is actually how long I'd kept my nails for a while before I started the blog, I was letting them get longer to better show off nail polish, but hacking them away felt good. I have a friend who hacked off her hair when she got mad, but I'm not into that kind of drastic change.

ANYWAY. I DIGRESS.

So I went to bed with unpolished nails, and then this morning I was in a bad mood since I'm having an unusually stressful week. I was like "You know what? Orange is the most unflattering color I own. Gosh dangit, I am flipping gonna paint my nails orange." So I did, and it was hideous.

This is two coats of CG Boundless Color Candy Corn.

Outside

Inside

I don't know what I was thinking when I bought this. Probably nothing. Whatever, this polish sucks. I would offer to swap it, but I don't think anyone would want it now that I've told you how ugly it is. Maybe you like oranges? If so, I will gladly give you this atrocity.

Have your nails ever made you want to throw babies out windows? What's the worst nail polish you've ever used? Tell me alllll about it.

Braaaaaains

5:40 PM Laura 3 Comments

First off, let me explain the title of today's post because you are, no doubt, confused.

Today's polish is Awakening by China Glaze. While to some people, that name may bring to mind thoughts of rebirth, renewal, and rejuvenation, it brings to my mind thoughts of the zombie apocalypse.

Seriously. You have no idea how terrified I am of zombies. They scare the living crap out of me. I mean, they're friggin' maggoty and undead and stuff, which is disgusting, and second of all, THEY ARE FLIPPING GONNA EAT YOUR GUTS.

We need to be prepared in case of the zombie apocalypse. Honestly. I hate zombies. I would viciously murder a zombie with much more force than necessary and then bury its head separate from its body (is that vampires? Whatever, they scare me too. Anything that doesn't die WHEN IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE FRICKING DEAD.) But zombies scare me a lot more than vampires because they're gross. At least vampires are clean (and in some cases, sparkly. Stephenie Meyer ruined any street cred vampires had when she wrote Twilight. Honestly, she scares me too, but for totally different reasons.)

Anyway, enough about my horrifying fear of zombies. I wonder if there's a word for that. Zombophobia? I definitely have it.

Thankfully, the polish was beautiful. I took lots of pics to show you all the prettiness :)

This is three coats. Lovely application, just like yesterday. China Glaze rawks.  Loooove all the gold shimmer. I wouldn't really classify this as a duochrome (a polish that is different colors from different angles, FYI for the polish uninformed) because it's really just varying shades of the same color. I really liked it, though, and it was surprisingly nice with my skin tone. Also I just noticed that cleanup sucked. Sorry, guys.

The only thing that could make this better is if it didn't make me think of zombies.

Anyone have tips for surviving the zombie apocalypse? They would be mucho appreciado.

Like a Virgin

Howdy! Bet the title really got you going there, eh? I chose it because I have been de-China-Glaze-virginified! I have to say, it was quite an enjoyable experience.

Outside

Inside

This is two coats of Watermelon Rind. Honestly, it looked like nothing to watermelon rind to me, but it was quite pretty anyway! Actually, that's an understatement. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I cannot tell you how much I love this color. It's really a perfect teal. These pictures are a little misleading, it leans more green in real life, with just the right amount of blue. I love teals, so maybe I'm a little biased, but whaaatever. This is gaw-juss. The shimmer is just right, not overpowering but not too subtle either... I think I'm in looove.

Application was lurrrvely. So silky and flowy... ahhh. Good stuff, China Glaze. I'm glad I've finally gotten to try this stuff. I tried wrapping my tips with marginal success, since I'm going to hack my nails down this week. I've got a piano recital and I can't have my nails click-clacking all over the place.

What's your favorite nail polish brand? Anything I should try?

A few things to get you hot and bothered

6:57 PM Laura 5 Comments

I kept my Easter nails on because I had a research paper to outline and didn't have time to change them last night, so here's what I have for you instead:

Tom Felton, AKA bad boy Draco Malfoy. You don't need to hug yourself, Tom, I'll do that for you...

And if that wasn't enough, this might make you feel flustered as well:

Cadbury Mini Egg Blondies. If you weren't drooling before, you are now.

Here's the recipe. You're welcome.

KIDS, LET GO OF MY HANDS, THESE AREN'T EASTER EGGS!

12:19 PM Laura 5 Comments

Happy Easter! If you're not Christian, Happy Sunday!

First off, since my toes are ugly and I want to get them out of the way, here is I Vant to be A-Lone Star as promised:

Outside, two coats. I know, there's a weirdly large gap between my big toe and my second toe. So what. I wear flip flops a lot.

Ain't she a beauty? I love it. I'll do it on my hands later, they're much more photogenic. Now for my Easter nails! Yaaaay!

Outside

Inside. I don't know why the stupid camera insists on making every indoor picture look like I live in a dungeon. There are lights in my house, I swear.

From left to right, the base polishes I used are: 2 coats Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Blue Away, 3 coats Revlon in Minted, 3 coats Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Yellow Kitty, and 3 coats Orly in Angel Face. (On my thumb I used Revlon in Gum Drop but as it's smudged I didn't want to show you. Not to mention I forgot to take a picture of it. It's the same as all the others, don't worry, you're not missing anything). For the designs, I used acrylic paint since the nail polishes I used were too sheer.

Also, let me tell you how stupid I am. I washed my hands this morning and I noticed my designs melting off. I was like "WHYYYYY CRUEL WORLD" and then I saw that the bottles proudly proclaimed that the paint was "Washable off of most surfaces!" GOSH DANGIT WHY DOES THE UNIVERSE TAUNT ME SO? I had to redo most of it and then I slapped me some OPI topcoat on it (2 layers) so this sucker's not going anywhere.

Also, I know it kind of looks like there's a bald spot on my middle finger, but there's actually really light blue dots there. They don't show up well at all, which is annoying, but overall I'm pretty happy with how these turned out.

Also, guess what I got for Easter (I bought them about a week ago but I'm teeechnically getting them today)? NAIL POLISH, OF COURSE! Two China Glazes, I'm super excited since I've never used the brand before, so I'll be wearing them within the next week.

Toodles, dearies!

Anti-Easter Polish

3:34 PM Laura 4 Comments

Hey, peeps! Hehe, that was punny, because you're my peeps, but also because tomorrow is Easter and peeps are going to make us all fat. They're not even that good, they're just like second-rate marshmallows rolled in weird sugar. Not sure what the fascination with them is, but they sure are cute.

Aaanyway, I've been wanting a brown FOREVER but the only brown I ever saw was Essie's Little Brown Dress which was eight bucks and therefore out of the question, but then - What's that I see? Doth mine eyes deceive me?
Outside

Inside

Revlon's Hot For Chocolate! This made me very happy. This is only one coat, folks, which is always worth about 50 squazillion points in my book. It looked lighter in the bottle, about the color of semisweet chocolate, but on my nails it's definitely the 70% pure cacao kind. Sorry for the atrocious pictures, I was kind of lazy with clean up. I tried to retouch it with iPhoto but I think that just made it worse. Overall, it was a nice formula, no problems with bubbling or gloopiness.

I thought this would be a nice palette-cleanser before all these sweet pastels coming up tomorrow. Speaking of...

I AM SO EXCITED TO DO MY EASTER MANI FOR TOMORROW! I really hope it'll turn out as nice as it looks in my head. Also, I saw I Vant to be A-Lone Star at HEB today AND I HAD TO GET IT. I have seen this color all over nail blogs and it is SO PRETTY! I couldn't find it anywhere so when I saw it I had to get it. I'm trying to restrain myself, really...

So I'll do that on my toes tomorrow, since it's pastel, and also I tripped coming into the house today and the polish got scraped off my toe :( Luckily no little piggies were harmed, but I took it as a cosmic sign that I should change my toenail polish.

Any springy or Eastery mani ideas you'd like to share?

Lions and tigers and... giraffes?

7:00 PM Laura 3 Comments

Hola! Today I have another Konad fail, I should probably just quit trying. But hey, practice makes perfect, right? Just wondering how much practice you have to do to get perfect...

But here's the base I used.

Two coats of Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Yellow Kitty (love the name)

Sooo, since I was going to the zoo today, I thought I should do some animal-themed nails.

Blargh. Not what I was hoping for. I used plate BM10, and I used Revlon's Hot For Chocolate for the stamping.

So yeah, not exactly the best stamp job. I did, however, get one good nail:

WHY COULDN'T THEY ALL LOOK LIKE THISSSS!?!?!? SOB

Ah well, I suppose one can't be perfect all the time. I did my best, though. I've been wanting a brown polish FOREVER, so I'll show you the Revlon by itself tomorrow. Hopefully it'll make me a lot happier than these stupid giraffe nails did.

So does anyone out there know the "trick" for Konading? IS there a trick? Can this be mastered? I'd love to know.

- Laura

GET YER BOOTIES OVER TO ZOYA **RIGHT NOW** (or before Wednesday)

11:04 AM Laura 0 Comments

Not to sound demanding, but seriously. Zoya is having their Earth Day promo going on and it's super awesome.

Basically, you only pay four bucks per bottle (normal price is seven), and when they send you the polish you send back any old or unwanted nail polish so that they can dispose of it safely.

So what are you waiting for???

READ ALL ABOUT IT!!!

I'm getting
  • Gemma
  • Charla
  • Adina
  • Dharma
  • Phoebe
  • Faye

I'm so excited! I haven't been able to find Zoyas ANYWHERE in Houston so I had to take advantage of this. :)

If anyone does know where Zoyas are sold here, though, info would be much appreciated!

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude.

Happy belated Pot Day! Yessiree, folks, you missed a great excuse to get high.

Now, I was informed on April 19th that April 20th was Pot Day. And I thought back to when I received my Konad plates, and I had noticed something strange: There was a marijuana leaf on one of the plates!

Plate BM07

Since I was pretty positive I wasn't going to be using this particular design any other time, I thought it was appropriate to use yesterday.

First, the base.

This is Rimmel London's Steel Grey. It's really not steel grey, more of a grurple. It's only one thickish coat, two coats would definitely be ideal. I was kind of in a hurry, and as you can see, I have some definite tip wear going on. It claims it lasts "Up to 10 Days," but you would definitely need a good topcoat. It's really a nice color though, I'll probably reswatch it for you sometime in the future.

This is my final design. I only did it on my thumbs since I thought that people might possibly think I was a druggie if I did every finger like this. Less is more, really. Anyway, I used Orly's Meet Me Under the Mistletoe for the stamping. It's a lovely color, I haven't used it by itself because I only have a mini of it and I'm kind of hoarding it. It's got nice teeny flakies in it, though. I couldn't believe how pretty the pot leaf was, heehee.

And since I didn't have time for a post on Tuesday, I got a day behind again, so I'll catch up.

This is the reason I didn't buy For Audrey.

Outside

Inside

Please ignore the awkward chunk taken out of my pinky and the pen mark on my index finger. I know, they make me sad, too :(

This is one coat of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Blue Away. As you can probably tell, I had tip wear with this too. I should probably try wrapping my tips, but my nails are too short to do that without smearing nail polish all over my finger, which makes me look like I have some sort of muscular dystrophy and can't grip paintbrushes right and got it all over myself.

Anyway, this was a very nice color, and scratched the itch I've been having for light blue.

So, have you ever celebrated Pot Day? Done any weird or interesting nail designs? Had any polish itches that needed scratching? I'd love to hear it!

Be a dahlia and read this post, won't you?

6:01 PM Laura 5 Comments

Phew, glad I got that cheesy name out of the way. Anybody got any guesses as to what today's polish is? Anybody? Aaaaanybody?

All right, it's Dahlia My Number by Finger Paints, a brand which I had never tried before.

Outside

 Inside
Well,  I have to say, application was AMAZING. Seriously. It was so smooth and buttery, just... heavenly. I am in love. The only downside, which made me reeeally sad, was that it bubbled a little bit :( I'm hoping this is just because I put the second coat on before waiting for the first coat to dry completely. (I did three coats in all)

The main reason I bought this was because a) it was a foreign brand to me, which is exciting, and b) it came with a ring. I wasn't really sure about this color when I bought it, but the more I looked at it the more I loved it. It wasn't quite as pretty as it was in the bottle (it had the slightest pink undertone which made it look a wee bit coral-y), but it was still lovely, and had a pretty gold shimmer.

And THEN, at school, a girl had Sally Hansen Three D. The label was all rubbed off so I don't know what "type" of Sally Hansen it was (Insta-Dri, Complete Salon Manicure, etc.) but I'm pretty willing to bet it's part of that cyber-y, digital-themed collection which I've been curious about.

Now, I already had the Finger Paints on my hands, so this isn't really a spot-on comparison, but it was the best I could do. I painted two coats of Three D over the three coats of Dahlia My Number on my left hand.
Outisde, don't have an inside because the stinking camera died.

Anyway, they look kinda similar in the pictures but are totally different in real life. While DMN has gold shimmer and is definitely orange, 3D is red-orange and has a subtle blue flash at certain angles.

I'm not sure which one I preferred. I don't know if either of them really works with my skintone, but I will be wearing DMN again anyway just because I love it!

Thoughts?

We're all mad here...

7:03 PM Laura 7 Comments

Let me warn you, this post is going to have LOTS of pictures. This might just be my favorite polish.

EVER.

It's Mad As a Hatter by OPI from the Alice in Wonderland collection, and it's a complete glitterbomb. This polish is stunning. I highly recommend it. This pictures can't do it justice.

Tried a blurry picture to show you the sparkle, this was the best I got.

This stuff is great. This was two coats, and I've had it for a while now so it's gotten kind of gloopy, but since it's a glitter and it's so gorgeous I really don't care.

I've had a small backlog of pictures ever since I went on the campout, so I figured I would try wearing this for more than a day so I could get rid of the extras, since I was annoyed at having to write about polish I had worn a few days ago.

Anyway, despite my love for this polish, it was hard to wear it for three days. I decided I had to do something to update it or I would die, so I did this.

Voila! That's OPI Feelin' Hot-Hot-Hot! and then CG Boundless Color Midnight Magic

I used tape. It's pretty nifty. Anyhoo, I am SO GLAD I can finally take this off.

However, I tend to leave toenail polish on for weeks, just because I don't like to bother with my feet. But I really liked this color, and though my little piggies aren't really the prettiest things to look at, I thought I'd share it with you.

Sally Hansen Salon Professionals Nail Lacquer in Pat On The Black, two coats.

It was nice and smooth. It's a rich eggplant color, very pretty :) I'll have to do this on my fingernails later to show it off better.

So tell me, what's your favorite polish?

Pale as a polar bear eating marshmallows in the middle of a blizzard

1:19 PM Laura 4 Comments

That pretty much describes my skintone. Why does this have anything to do with anything? Today's polish is brought to you by CG Boundless Color and is called Bronze Beauty.

I'm jealous.

Four coats, outside, no sun. Accidentally deleted the indoor picture. Oops!

I wasn't really feeling this one. It's a nice color, but I think you just have to be in the mood for it. If you click on it, you should be able to see that while it generally appears as a kind of white-gold color, it's got bronze flecks in it. They're especially visible in the bottle.

It's quite sheer, you could still see a teensy-weensy bit of VNL (visible nail line, n00bs) in certain lighting. It's a nice unremarkable formula, smooth, and again, sheer. Sheer polishes just annoy me. Not really my thing, I suppose.

In other news, I went on a mini shooping (I make that typo all the time, and it never fails to crack me up) shopping spree yesterday, teehee. I got one springy Sally Hansen, one Revlon in a color that I have NEEDED for the longest time, one Finger Paint (never used this brand before, gave the ring that came with it to a friend for her birthday), and two China Glazes (also a first for me).

Now, having browsed around the nail blog-o-sphere, I have surmised For Audrey is sort of like an apostle for the polish-obsessed. Not quite Jesus, that would probably be Clarins 230 (which can cost you about eighty bucks a pop on ebay. I checked). However, I passed it up (gasp!) because one of the other polishes I got earlier was also a light blue. For Audrey did have just the slightest (THE SLIGHTEST) hint of sea green, which was lovely, and if I had known that I would run into it I probably would have gotten it in favor of the Sally Hansen that was also pastel blue. Hopefully, For Audrey will someday be mine as well.

ANYWAY, I kind of feel redundant, but comments are always always always appreciated! I would love to hear your thoughts.

- Laura

Hot Cocoa

10:01 AM Laura 1 Comments

Boy, it's getting difficult to come up with creative names for these posts.

So after yesterday's Barbie-o-rama, I was in the mood for something darker and vampier. This is Sally Hansen Salon Nail Lacquer in Haute Chocolate.

Outside

Inside

This wasn't quite dark enough to really satisfy my mood, but it's nice nonetheless. I think the best way to describe this is "burgundy." Now, don't quote me on this, but I'm preeeetty sure this is three coats. It was smooth but I went to bed too soon after putting it on so it had kind of dulled in the morning. I put a layer of OPI topcoat on it.

I should probably say here that all the polishes I have posted previously have been sans topcoat. I'll tell you if I put a topcoat on it, otherwise, consider it naked.

It had a little bit of dark red shimmer in it, but only in just the right lighting.

Overall, a nice color, but I don't really have anything notable to say about it.

Maybe you do? If you like it, hate it, or have something to say, just leave a comment!

G'day, mates! Anybody get the song reference in the title? No?

There ya go, Laffy Taffy by D4L

The reason I am showing you this obnoxious, misogynistic rap song is because it pops into my head whenever I see "Taffy," and this nail polish is CG Boundless Color Pink Taffy.

 Inside

 Outside

And my favorite ring :)

I love this color! It's so happy and sweet and OMG like I totally volunteered at the animal shelter after cheerleading practice yesterday, the kitties were SOOOO CUUUUUTE!

Kinda like that, but it's nice. This was four coats, nice and shiny and definitely pink. It's a good formula, nothing bad to say there. This is probably the Barbie-est color I've ever seen. It's definitely good for girly days, it made me happy to look at :) However, I tend to mess with my nails a lot so this had lots of chips and dents in it by the end of the day. It's not the most durable, since I do this to all nail polishes and plenty of them hold up better. But, if you don't have the obsessive need to tap at your nails all day, then it should be fine.

So, do you like it, or is it obnoxiously girly? Comment!

Konad Tutorial!

PHEW, I'm finally posting today! I had a sort of busy afternoon, but it's finally here!

All right. First up, the supplies.

So that weird conical thing on the left is the stamp. The smaller end off to the side is green and it's for teensier designs. I like the full-nail designs best so I've only used the big red end so far. They're both just rubbery stamps... Anyway, down center is the little holder thing and the image plate. The holder is supposed to keep it in place, but I'm not sure if it really does that much. The red thing down right is the scraper, which gets rid of the flood of nail polish that you'll see later. Up above you have my handy-dandy acetone-coated cotton ball, and then you've got my stamping nail polish up top.

Just thought I'd show you the polish I used as a base, Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Green With Envy.

And then here's the image plate after I've drowned it in nail polish.

Then you use your handy-dandy scraper to get rid of all the extra junk.

Then you roll your stamp across the image so that you pick it up.

 Voila! Magnifique, no?

So it's really pretty simple. Trust me. Anyway, I've still got stuff to do so I'll be off.

I feel guilty about leaving without hardly writing anything. Hopefully today's post was helpful to make up for it?

Hey, I have an idea! Why don't you comment me about it? Was my tutorial good? What could I do better? TELL ME.

LUV YA,
- Laura
